Bill Clinton’s Illogical Argument for Democrat Rule
by Heywood U. Reedmore -- August 28, 2008 at 12:05 am | In 2008 Election | No CommentsDuring his convention speech, Bill Clinton bragged about his record as President — his job creation and balanced budgets — and then asked voters to compare it to the results of Republican leadership during the last eight years, when — he alleged — they controlled the government.
But there are some glaringly obvious problems with Clinton’s argument. For one, Clinton’s record was built with a Republican congress. The successes he touted are shared. If voters want an idea of what unencumbered Democrat leadership is like, they need to look at Jimmy Carter’s record and Clinton’s first two years. The latter was hardly an example of great success and the prior was a disaster.
Meanwhile, the Democrats have controlled congress for the last 20 months. If things are as bad now as the Democrats would have us believe (ignoring, of course, the 3.3% GDP growth recorded in Q208), then surely they share a big part of the blame. The Republicans would be well served to make that case.
