Obama to Public Financing: It’s not me. It’s you.
by Heywood U. Reedmore -- June 20, 2008 at 10:50 am | In 2008 Election | 2 CommentsObama’s pledge to accept public spending limitations wasn’t even as strong as his refusal to denounce Reverend Wright. Indicative of a shallow man led astray by his new-found power, he dumped his old, faithful girlfriend for a hot young super model. And as he kicked her to the curb, he didn’t even hold back to spare her feelings: “It’s not me,” he said. “It’s you.” It was her fault he had lied and broken his promise to marry her; she couldn’t give him what he needed. As far as rejections go, this one was particularly harsh given Obama had been courting and flattering her for so long.
As if the public financing system was its scorned daughter, the Washington Post has jumped to its defense and scolded Obama for his broken promise.
But the New York Times (and most of the media) is playing the role of his best friend, defending his infidelity. The Times cited the role of 527’s as justification — “It’s no big thing, everybody cheats.” The Times claims McCain is inviting the 527’s to help him. Really? That’s not what John McCain says. And Politico’s Jonathan Martin finds there is no anti-Obama 527 effort in play right now. He cites several sources who say they are reluctant to form one out of fear that McCain will denounce them. The Times also admires Obama’s effort to raise money from small donors — “The super model is better for him; he deserves to be happy, too.” But WaPo’s Jay Mandle finds that claim a canard as well. One wonders if the Times just made the whole thing up. Oh, well, what’s a best friend to do when they’re buddy’s been caught red-handed.
Update: Mark Shields has more stats illustrating Obama’s dishonesty on this point.

[...] Are we being conned? When his promises are so casually broken or dismissed as “overheated” rhetoric… what can we actually expect to get come Tuesday? [...]

[...] Obama alluded to a coming wave of dirty attacks when he opted out of public financing, too. He seems to be saying, “I’d love to run a high-minded, clean campaign but those scumbag Republicans aren’t going to let me.” He goes on to say that those Republican tactics will just divide us. And what? Making crass generalizations about a large segment of the electorate will unite us? So much for civility. Either he never intended for these remarks to get out, or he’s no longer interested in winning over Republicans. [...]
