Don’t Worry, The UN Won’t Control Our Immigration Policy

As the U.S. and other countries are weighing immigration reform legislation, Kofi Annan expressed his support for migration in yesterday’s Opinion Journal:

In a report that I am presenting tomorrow to the U.N. General Assembly, I summarize research which shows that migration, at least in the best cases, benefits not only the migrants themselves but also the countries that receive them, and even the countries they have left.

So, in the “best cases,” migration is good all around. But what isn’t good when you only consider the “best cases”?

So why would Annan write about immigration now as our National Guard is headed for the border? This quote should give you a hint:

Yes, migration can have its downside–though ironically some of the worst effects arise from efforts to control it…

The General Assmebly will hold a “high-level dialogue” on migration and development this Septmeber. But in one of those “don’t worry” kind of statements that makes you worry why he even brought it up, Annan assures us:

No country will be asked or expected to yield control of its borders or its policies to anyone else.

That’s a relief seeing as how he seems to be saying the only bad border policy is having one in the first place.
