Dan Rather is Still Not Ready to Call Ohio
for President Bush
By Weston Easton

Dan Rather is still unwilling to call the state of Ohio for
President Bush until all the votes are counted.  According to
the revered CBS News anchor, some absentee ballots are still
unaccounted for and as long as they come in postmarked on
or before Election Day, they’ll count.

“Ohio is still closer than kissing cousins on a camping trip,”
said Rather who maintains that if over a hundred thousand
ballots turn up and they all are for Kerry, there is still a chance
the Senator can win.  “I’m not saying it’s a good chance,”
said Rather. “I’m not even saying it’s likely. But it could
happen and so we’re going to be extra careful this time
around.”

CBS, however, was able to call Pennsylvania for Kerry just a
few hours after the polls closed even though the margin of
victory was narrower than the margin in Ohio. Rather denied
any contradiction.  “We just call ‘em how we see ‘em and
that’s how we see it,” said Rather. “We ain’t calling Ohio until
all the eggs are hatched and the chicks have left the coup.”

The Bush administration failed to comment other than to say
they didn't plan to hold up cabinet appointments until Rather
called the election. “We understand it might take him a while
to be comfortable with our victory,” said one administration
official.
